| Newtons Cove. |
|
 |
| Under a mile from Weymouth Town Centre | |
|
The View:
Great views towards Portland Harbour can be had from this relatively quiet location. You'll often find keen fishers on the promenade, however when the tide is out and the lines are gone, the rock pools are exposed until the sea claims them back. There is a nice little ice-cream kiosk here too.
How to get there:
From the Town Centre cross the Town Bridge, turn left and head towards Brewers Quay. Walk through Hope Square and up Hill Lane (next to Dream Cottages). Once up the lane, cross the road to the adjacent path and walk down the wooden stairs. Hello Portland Harbour!
Whats around:
The Nothe gardens which is nice for a picnic or in the other direction is the coastpath to Portland.

| Sandsfoot Castle. |
|
 |
| 1.5 miles from Weymouth Town Centre | |
|
The View:
Again you have a great viewpoint looking across Portland Harbour with the imposing remains of Sandsfoot Castle stands somewhat defiantly on the cliff edge. Henry VIII built Sandsfoot in the late 1530s to defend threats from Roman Catholics. The Castle was also used as a mint during the civil war, although unfortunately none remains.
How to get there:
Walk along the Rodwell Trail from Weymouth, follow the signs to Sandsfoot Gardens.
Whats around:
There are some lovely gardens with a tea shop in the corner. A good place to stop for a break if your walking
the Old Railway Line to Portland.

| The White Horse. |
|
 |
| 5 miles from Weymouth Town Centre | |
|
The View:
The White Horse is a limestone hill figure carved into Osmington Hill in 1808. The horseman is King George III who regularly visited the resort, probably on his way to take a dip. However there is much speculation about the fact he is riding out of Weymouth being of offence to the King, the story I was told as a boy was that the sculptor was beheaded!
How to get there:
Catch the 4B First bus from the Kings Statue to Sutton Poyntz and follow the signs from there
Whats around:
The walk around the White Horse
is subdued and peaceful. Stop at the Springhead for a drink and admire the slow-pace of
Sutton Poyntz by the duck filled mill-pond.

| Chesil Cove. |
|
 |
| 5 miles from Weymouth Town Centre | |
|
The View:
The view from Chesil Cove is breathtaking. It is possible to take in the sheer scale of the natural tombolo that stretches for 18 miles to West Bay. This has got to be one of my favourite views, especially in a warm evening with a pint in hand watching the sunset. It really doesn't get any better!
For more information on Chesil Beach heres the website.
How to get there:
Drive to Portland or No. 1 Bus from Weymouth to Victoria Square. from there continue along to Chiswell and turn into the Cove Inn or the Esplanade there.
Whats around:
The Cove Inn is a fantastic pub situated right on the beach front. The Blue Fish restaurant is close by also.

Whats around:
The Merchants Railway which forms part of the Julia Bradbury Railway Walk is very closeby.
|
| Ringstead. |
|
 |
| 7 miles from Weymouth Town Centre | |

The View: A different angle on Weymouth this time. The National Trust carpark above Ringstead Bay gives fantastic views across Weymouth from the east. Looking down on Weymouth Bay and Portland from this tranquil spot is relaxing and again, a great place to watch the sunset.
How to get there: From Weymouth drive along the A353 towards Preston, continue along the road and the turning for Ringstead is after Osmington on the right. Parking at the top is National Trust.th
